For parents of children with a fresh diagnosis of Autism: Positive thoughts and affirmative action

As yet another Com DEALL year draws to an end and we gear up for our next batch, my thoughts are with parents of children who have just been diagnosed. I can empathise with them – Denial, pain, anger, questioning: many will go through these before the final acceptance. I have been asking myself as to what I would like to say to them. A mantra of positive thoughts and affirmative action is the key. You may have little control over the cards that life deals you but what you make of those cards is entirely in your hands. Here is my top five list of affirmative action-

  1. Seek another appointment with the person who gave you the diagnosis. The first time around, you may not have been ready with all the questions that are bothering you now. If a second appointment not possible for any reason; talk to a certified expert. The internet, if used wisely is a good source but talking is important too.
  2. Ask to be introduced to another family whose profile matches that of yours. It is helpful to understand from the perspective of someone who has walked the talk before you.
  3. Be wary of quick fix promises. As of date there is no medical cure for Autism, intensive early intervention is known to yield optimal result. Start intervention asap, there is nothing your child deserves more!
  4. Most important remember your bundle of joy is still your bundle of joy. It is your choice to be happy with him/her. At the moment things may appear bleak, perhaps your child is tantruming a lot and you are not able to reach out to him/her, maybe your child had speech before but is no longer using it, you may be feeling very challenged. Remember help is at hand. You can work towards these challenges one by one.
  5.  Special is not a cliché. Your child has his/her own set of unique capabilities and challenges. The path for you is difficult but will come with many joys and discoveries as you unravel your unique child.
